After 2021, Afghanistan My Passion entered a period of silence. Posting slowed and the familiar rhythm of sharing photographs, memories and cultural moments came to a stop. The silence did not mean that Afghanistan’s stories had lost their value. It reflected a moment when continuing in the same way no longer felt possible.

When everything felt different

The events of 2021 changed the lives of Afghans inside the country and across the world. Familiar places carried new meanings, old photographs felt more fragile, and the distance between memory and the present became more difficult to describe.

There was no single photograph or caption capable of expressing everything people were experiencing. Pausing became part of confronting that uncertainty.

Silence is also part of history

Digital archives often appear continuous, but real human projects are not. They contain interruptions, unanswered questions and periods when those responsible for them must reconsider how history should be presented.

The silence became part of the Afghanistan My Passion timeline. It marked a boundary between an earlier era of social-media publishing and a future project that would need greater structure, context and care.

What remained

Although new activity stopped, the earlier photographs, screenshots, milestones and community memories did not disappear. They remained evidence of years of connection and of an Afghan digital community that had gathered around shared affection for the country.

With time, the pause made the importance of preservation even clearer. Digital platforms can change, accounts can become inactive and individual posts can be lost. A lasting archive requires more than a social-media feed.

Remembering with care

The eventual return would therefore need to be thoughtful. Historical material would require dates, sources and explanations. Stories would need space beyond short captions. English, Dari and Pashto readers would need to encounter the archive in their own languages.

The silence after 2021 was not the end of Afghanistan My Passion. It became the quiet interval before a different kind of beginning one focused on preserving memory for the long term.
